English: The 1st text page of the Pervigilium Veneris in codex S, the famous Codex Salmasianus.

In addition to the inscriptio (headline) INCIPIT PERUIGILIU(m) UENERIS (“here begins the Vigil of Venus”) there are two additional notes of the copyist before the text of the poem:

  1. TROCAICO METRO (“in trochees”).
  2. sunt vero versus xxii (“there are 22 verses/stanzas/poems”). The meaning of this note is much disputet, because actually the Pervigilium has 93 verses. The note has stimulated some proposals to rearrange the text of the Pervigilium into 22 stanzas, because versus may also mean “stanzas”. But as Riese already explained in his edition of the Anthologia Latina (1894), the versus xxii may just refer to the 22 poems in this section of the Anthologia Latina or of the Codex Salmasianus resp., because versus may also mean “poems”. Cf. the number “XVI” before the inscriptio which also seems to refer to a section or book of the complete anthology, not to the single poem (see Riese, Praefatio to his edition, pp. xxi–xxii).
At the left of the initial C, there is a marginal note that reads (according to Clementi, Pervigilium Veneris, 3rd ed. 1936, p. 32): editum est a Petro / Pithoeo, followed by a big $-like mark. According to Clementi (ibd.), the $-like mark refers to the correction amabit → amavit in the 1st line of the poem, done by Salmasius or another humanist with the inital S; the rest of the note was added by a lated hand and refers to Pierre Pithou’s editio princeps of the poem in 1577.

Außer der inscriptio (Überschrift) INCIPIT PERUIGILIU(m) UENERIS („Hier beginnt die Nachtfeier der Venus“) begegnen vor dem Text des Gedichtes zwei Hinweise des Schreibers:

  1. TROCAICO METRO („in trochäischem Versmaß“).
  2. sunt vero versus xxii („es sind 22 Verse/Strophen/Gedichte“). Die Bedeutung dieser Anmerkung ist recht umstritten, da das Pervigilium in Wirklichkeit 93 Verse hat. Die Anmerkung hat daher einige Versuche angeregt, den Text des Pervigiliums in 22 Strophen anzuordnen, da versus auch „Strophen“ bedeuten kann. Doch wie schon Riese in seiner Ausgabe der Anthologia Latina (1894) erklärt hat, kann sich das versus xxii einfach auf die 22 Gedichte in diesem Abschnitt der Anthologia Latina bzw. des Codex Salmasianus beziehen — versus kann ja auch „Gedichte“ bedeuten. Vgl. auch die Zahl „XVI“ vor der inscriptio, die sich ebenfalls auf einen Abschnitt bzw. ein Buch der ganzen Anthologie zu beziehen scheint, nicht auf das einzelne Gedicht (siehe Riese, Praefatio zu seiner Ausgabe, S. xxi–xxii).
